Fishing on the Detroit River is heating up as we roll into the tail end of May. The water temps are hovering in the low 60s, and the bite has been consistent across most of the river. Whether you’re chasing walleye, smallmouth bass, or even the occasional white bass, now’s a great time to be on the water. Walleye are still the main target for many anglers. The post-spawn fish are scattered but still actively feeding. Vertical jigging remains the top technique—1/2 oz jig heads tipped with minnows or plastics are getting solid results. Hot spots include the Ambassador Bridge, Fighting Island, and Trenton Channel. Expect a mixed bag of eater-size fish and some quality 4–6 pounders. Smallmouth bass action is picking up fast. They’re staging and beginning to push shallow. Look for rocky structure and current breaks. Tube jigs, Ned rigs, and drop shots are all producing bites.
